Quick concept review

A fraction describes part of a whole. In 3/4, the denominator 4 tells you how many equal parts the whole is cut into, and the numerator 3 tells you how many of those parts you are talking about.

Equivalent fractions name the same amount: multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number. For example, 2/3 = 4/6 = 8/12.

To compare or add fractions with different denominators, first rewrite them with a common denominator. Example: 3/4 = 9/12 and 2/3 = 8/12, so 3/4 is greater than 2/3.
