An equation is a statement that two expressions are equal, such as x + 7 = 15. Solving it means finding the value of the unknown that makes the statement true.
Keep the equation balanced: whatever you do to one side, do to the other. To undo +7, subtract 7 from both sides; to undo ×3, divide both sides by 3.
Always check your answer by putting it back in the equation. For x + 7 = 15 we get x = 8, and 8 + 7 = 15 is true.
