Quick concept review

A linear equation in one variable has the unknown only to the power 1, for example 3x + 4 = 2x + 9. It has exactly one solution.

When the unknown is on both sides, collect the x terms on one side and the numbers on the other. For 3x + 4 = 2x + 9: subtract 2x from both sides to get x + 4 = 9, then subtract 4 to get x = 5.

For word problems, choose a letter for the unknown, write the condition as an equation, solve it and then check it against the story.

Curriculum note: NCERT's Class 8 mathematics book for 2026-27 is Ganita Prakash, published in two parts. We have not confirmed which chapter covers linear equations in one variable, so this resource is not labelled as aligned to a chapter. Please check it against your own textbook.
