Quick concept review
A rational number can be written as p/q where p and q are integers and q is not zero. Its decimal expansion either ends (like 0.875) or repeats (like 0.333...).
An irrational number cannot be written as p/q. Its decimal expansion neither ends nor repeats. Examples include √2 and π.
Rationalising removes a root from a denominator: 1/√2 = (1 × √2)/(√2 × √2) = √2/2. Laws of exponents, such as a^m × a^n = a^(m+n), help simplify powers.
Curriculum note: 'Number System' is a unit in the CBSE Class 9 Mathematics syllabus for 2026-27 (published by CBSE in April 2026, per secondary sources we checked). We could not confirm exactly which sub-topics, such as irrational numbers and surds, appear in the 2026-27 syllabus, so please check the official CBSE syllabus and your textbook before relying on this quiz for exam preparation.
